Theurapeutic onsen bathing has been cherished since the Edo period in Japan.
Many people have experienced firsthand the health benefits of onsens.

Have you ever wondered, "Aren’t all onsens the same?"

In truth, the mineral composition of each onsen varies, making no two springs identical.

“Therapeutic onsen pairing” invites you to enjoy hot springs in pairs.
This amplifies their complementary effects—where "1 + 1" isn’t just 2, but 3 or even 4!

THERAPEUTIC ONSEN RESEARCH

Historically, during the Edo period in Joshu (now Gunma Prefecture), it was recommended to follow a soak in the highly acidic waters of Kusatsu Onsen with the milder waters of Sawatari Onsen or Shima Onsen. In those old days, people discovered that this combination improved their skin condition. This traditional practice is considered the origin of therapeutic onsen pairing.

When it comes to therapeutic onsen pairing in Beppu City, two classic courses stand out for their effectiveness and popularity among vistors. They are:

① Shampoo & Rinse Course
Acidic sulfur spring → Mildly acidic chloride spring

② Ultra Smooth Skin Course

Neutral sulfur spring → Mildly alkaline bicarbonate spring

Beyond these, other scientifically-backed pairings have been introduced, alongside hand-picked combinations curated by onsen enthusiasts. With countless possibilities still waiting to be discovered, why not explore and create a pairing that’s uniquely yours?

BEPPU HOT SPRINGS

Beppu City is known for having the most abundant hot springs in Japan. The sheer quantity and variety of its springs far surpass other hot spring areas. In fact, out of the 10 types of hot springs categorized by Japan's Ministry of the Environment, 7 can be found in Beppu!

Additionally, there are 8 hot spring areas known as the "Beppu Hatto," each offering unique mineral composition and attractions. Beppu is truly an onsen wonderland! With such a wide variety of hot springs in close proximity, Beppu is the perfect place to fully enjoy the benefits of onsen therapy.

In fact, the practice of 'therapeutic onsen pairings' was first introduced to Beppu in 2002, however, it has taken some time to be fully embraced by both locals and tourists.
